foreigners stealing our jobs?

Sentiments online are rife, that local fresh grads are unable to find jobs because of unchecked competition from foreigners. While I do see the need to regulate the number of foreigners in white collar work, the criticism seems just like another wild assumption. As a fresh grad myself, finding jobs have been a cruise. Similarly, it has not been a problem with my peers across various disciplines. Most of us have found work since leaving school in May, a minority few have not but only because they are still searching for that one job while forgoing other opportunities.

But in reality, what kind of jobs are these foreigners doing? Most, though not all, are only filling gaps of work Singaporeans shun. Nursing, aids in old folk homes, bus drivers, construction, etc. We need them in order to have a proper functioning society. On the other hand, I do recognise the need to have a safety net for older Singaporeans whom may not have the adequate education and thus in direct competition with the foreign workers. The explosion of foreigners into the engineering industry have also kept wages low and disadvantageous to Singaporeans. But this issue seems to have been blown out of proportion on the Internet, only natural for some to jump onto the bandwagon.
